Oral Examinations
Regular oral examinations, twice a year if possible, give your dentist a chance to identify any oral health issues that may be developing and make a plan to treat them accordingly.
During your appointment, our dentist will closely examine the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. These exams may also include dental X-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer has the potential to affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During your exam, your dentist will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and gums for any signs of oral cancer that are difficult to detect without the proper tools.
Oral Health Care at Home
To keep your smile healthy between dental appointments, make sure your daily oral care routine consists of brushing your teeth at least twice for two minutes each time, and flossing at least once.
Hygiene Cleaning
Either before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums using a Cavitron device to treat existing problems and prevent disease from developing down the road.
First, they will use a scaler to remove any tartar and plaque build-up. They will then use a polisher as well as coarse toothpaste to get rid of leftover stains or plaque, finishing up with a professional flossing of your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
If it turns out you or your child is at high risk of tooth decay, your dentist could provide a recommendation for fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can assist in rebuilding the minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent and even reverse tooth decay.
